The Zen patriarchs encourage us to manage attachment, craving and ignorance. 

Buddhist Ken Wilber compares spirituality to the stock market. Wilber says that, over the long haul, there is a slow upward trend. Over the short haul, there can be considerable pain and suffering. 

There are some things that we have to learn the hard way. Most important, money is a means to an end, not an end in itself.
