Social Media Personal Hygiene

Aug 04, 2022 by Larry Jordan, in Politics
Lately, I have seen a number of friends partially dial back or totally get off of social media. At times, I have been tempted to do the same thing myself, so I started cleaning up my feed.

I have 300 "friends" on Facebook, but three or four of them are really not friends, and three or four of them are friends with nutty ideas that account for 95% of my frustrations, so I unfriended five or six people. Better.

I have some friends who constantly post Bible quotes or cat pictures or eggplant recipes or game requests. I'm not interested, so I clicked "Hide all from {website}" or "Hide post," and the posts disappeared. Better.

I have some concern that Facebook is pushing too much unwanted content and sharing too much personal information, so I checked my account settings.
It turn outs that I'm allowing applications that I didn't know that I was allowing and sharing information that I didn't know that I was sharing, so I restricted them. Better.

It turns out that Facebook thinks that I'm interested in chocolate truffles and European soccer and various other random topics. I'm not interested, so I deleted them. Better.

I have some concern that Facebook is spreading Russian propaganda, so I clicked on the Russian propaganda tool to see if I had liked or followed any Russian posts. Nyet.

I have some concern that I'm hearing one side of the story, so I downloaded Read Across the Aisle, which identifies any bias in your reading. Too far right? Try Huffington Post. Too far left? Try Drudge Report. Better.

Works for me. Let me know what works for you.
